Being a minority is a struggle in itself. Not being part of the larger population is a guaranteed barrier in college.
At California State University, Long Beach, there were support systems for Latinos, clubs such as M.E.Ch.A, La Raza, and the Hispanic Student Business Association (HSBA) were available for Latino students. Our foundation began with La Raza. This club was focused more on social equality for Latino students on and off campus. They were also a very political group during the times that the EZLN declared their campaign against the state of Mexico. Students within La Raza were able to find their home away from home with this group.
During the Fall of 1986 a group of Latino men wanted to see what the Greek life was about. Some of them joined Interfraternal Greeks, others felt excluded. There was no set Latino Greek organization at CSULB at the time. The students were fed up with trying to find a place to be, and decided it best to start their own. After months of figuring out the logistics of a Greek organization, the men took it upon themselves to start a Latino Greek Fraternity. They called it Delta Sigma Chi.
On August 31st, 1987, California State University, Long Beach officially recognized Delta Sigma Chi Fraternity, Inc. as an established greek organization.
